§ Virtual Library Project:

Dec. 5, 1997
Frankfort, KY

I had hoped to have some hard data on prices from First Search, SilverPlatter, UMI and IAC by now in order to send you both notes and that info. Unfortunately, although I have made contact with all four, I do not have prices yet. I will continue to work on this during the holidays. In addition, I will work out the timeline and complete the alternative budgets for different funding levels. If you need to be in touch with me, I will be checking my e-mail from home.

At the December 5 meeting our committee decided on the these alternatives, based on ILL need and on price. We also discussed briefly what electronic sources to include at different funding levels (see paragraph above). Our discussion is summarized below.

IF we receive full funding, our choices would be the following:

  1. 1. BASE OFFERINGS Depending on the Document Delivery committee's sense of the need for having the direct ILL link provided by a full-text periodical database through OCLC (still don't have a decision on this), the base for the virtual library would be either: (If OCLC ILL link is deemed necessary) The standard First Search base package (not KDLA version) to include UMI's Periodical Abstracts (abstract and indexing only) plus Searchbank Expanded Academic Index (IF OCLC ILL link is not necessary) The standard FS base package plus SearchBank Expanded Academic Index
  2. 2. OTHER IAC (SEARCHBANK) DATABASES AND ALTERNATES Business and Company Profile (or ABI/INFORM Abstracts and Indexing, 1985-, either through FS or UMI) Choice among the three to be based on price Health Reference Center Academic.
  3. 3. FIRST SEARCH DATABASES: number of ports needed still to be determined with FS ABI/Inform (see note above) Applied Science and Technology Index Art Abstracts Dissertation Abstracts (unless available from UMI at a better rate) Books in Print CINAHL Microcomputer Abstracts MLA Bibliography PAIS Wilson I index package Wilson II index package Sociology Abstracts Chem Abstracts Student Edition PsycInfo (unless available from Silver Platter at a better rate)
  4. 4. NEWSPAPER INDEX AND FULL-TEXT DATABASES Newsstand collection from UMI
  5. 5. OTHER DATABASES Encyclopedia Americana Congressional Compass Statistical Masterfile I have not attached prices to the list above, but based on earlier quotes this list would come in very near to the $1,250,000 quoted for full funding as listed in the budget Miko distributed at the meeting.
