Attendance:

Call to Order:
Arne Almquist called the meeting to order at 11:07 a.m.
Minutes from Previous Meeting:
Minutes from the December 10, 2004 meeting were distributed. Any changes should be sent to Anne.
Wiley Update:
- Arne, Carol, Suzy and Anne met virtually in January to put together the Wiley proposal.
- The proposal was sent to Mike Phillips at Wiley in late January. Wiley is working on the response and will get back to us shortly.
- We are asking for two prices: a one year deal and a three year. We have asked them to include a LOCKSS provision.
Status Update on Science Direct:
- Elsie wanted to know what everyone else is doing for a license agreement with Elsevier for Science Direct. Morehead did not find the original deal offered to them to be worth the money. They are meeting with a representative to hear about a “bridging” proposal. Morehead has cancelled a large number of journals and may cancel more.
- U of L is making cuts this year and plans to make more cuts next year. They won’t see significant cost savings until next year, based on the breaks they lost from their cancellations.
- Murray will be cutting at least half of their titles.
- UK made major cancellations.
- Eastern had cancelled the previous year. They are getting access only to the titles they subscribe to now.
Announcements:
- Western Kentucky University--Mike provided updates on several events occurring at Western in the next few weeks. There is a Children’s literature conference, a Kentucky Writers Conference, and a Southern Kentucky Book Fest. These events are receiving quite a bit of publicity, including from the visitors bureau. Western will be planning for their centennial celebrations.
- Morehead--The search for applicants for the Dean’s job has been extended. The new deadline is in March.
- UK is planning to host David Halberstam for their Distinguished Authors Lecture series on November 16, 2005.
- U of L is planning a 2 millionth volume celebration; the date has not been set, but it will likely be late April or early May.
- Eastern will also be planning their centennial celebrations.
- KCTCS is planning their meeting. This will be co-sponsored by Madisonville Community College and Murray State University. It will be held at Byrnes Auditorium of the Health Campus at Madisonville Community College in Madisonville, KY at 10:00 a.m. on April 22, 2005. Lee Van Orsdel will be speaking.
Lunch Break
EAI Portal System:
- Laurene presented information on the CAMPUSEAI Consortium. Murray State is cooperating in this effort which provides a framework where all elements of the university can be integrated into an institution’s existing authentication system.
ARL Training Session:
- Carol has approached ARL for dates and details. We will need to decide the location.
- Anne will do a straw poll this month to see how many individuals each institution would want to send to the session.
OCLC Copyright Session Update:
- Registration opened for the session last week. So far, more than 27 registrations have been received.
- Anne is taking care of the arrangements.
- A student rate for those in the library school will be offered.
Proposed Effort to Collect Statewide Information on Holdings/Expenditures:
- We often have to pull together statewide information on holdings and expenditures for a variety of reasons.
- Arne proposed that we collect this information in conjunction with the annual salary survey that we are already doing.
- The basic statistics could then be compiled on the website.
- Elsie will start by pulling together the ACRL data and National Center for Educational Statistics data for all SAALCK institutions.
- We will then decide if additional information is needed.
Products to be Proposed for Consortial Purchase:
- ProQuest Safari Books—Arne received a quote for this collection (unlimited access to 1,800 titles, adding 75 titles per month) at a cost per institution of $16,878.50. There is a smaller package available for $29,800 total ($3,725 per institution). This smaller collection is currently used by U of L. The product includes MARC records for each title. The smaller collection allows 16 simultaneous users. The collection includes self-help manuals in the technology area. Anne will arrange for a trial with Barb Brazis and we will explore other pricing options.
- Ebsco Communications and Mass Media—Suzy presented this product that was on trial from Ebsco in 2004. U of L provided it online for a year. The U of L quote for the product is $8K. UK and Murray already have subscribed to this title. We will ask Lee to speak to them about a deal.
- ArtStor Institutional Hosting—Suzy presented information on this product. The basic product is a digital image collection of art resources. They also offer a service to host an institution’s local slide collection online. There was limited interest.
- North American Title Count Program—Arne received information on this product and wanted to know if there is group interest. The analysis goes down to the LC class. The group determined to keep it in mind, but not pursue the idea at this time.
Other Business:
- The move of the GCLC offices went very well.
- Anne provided an update on the accounts. It is important for all institutions to pay invoices upon receipt since SAALCK does not keep a large balance on account with GCLC.
- The CSA invoice will be partially paid, pending receipt of payment from KSU.
- GCLC will accept credit card payments for the Copyright Workshop. GCLC will then pay SAALCK their share of the receipts after the workshop. This is to prevent the commingling of funds between the organizations.
- As of this meeting, lunch will be paid by GCLC and billed out to the institutions annually as part of the dues.
Next Meeting:
The next meeting is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. March 11, 2005 at U of L.
Adjournment:
The meeting adjourned at 1:25 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Anne K. Abate
Executive Director
