§ SAALCK Directors' Council Meeting
11:00 a.m., December 10, 2004
University of Louisville
Louisville, KY
Attendance:
Arne Almquist (Chair), Northern Kentucky University; Cherry Berges, KCTCS; Elsie Pritchard, Morehead State University; Mike Binder, Western Kentucky University; Suzy Palmer, University of Louisville; Diane Nichols, University of Louisville; Kate Seago, University of Kentucky; Lee Van Orsdel, Eastern Kentucky University; and Anne Abate, GCLC. Hannelore Rader, University of Louisville joined the meeting near the end.
Call to Order:
Arne Almquist called the meeting to order at 11:15 a.m.
Minutes from Previous Meeting:
Minutes from the November 11, 2004 meeting were approved with minor corrections.
Elsevier Follow Up:
- NKU will probably be cutting up to 25% of their Elsevier titles within 2 years based on cost per use.
- UK is still waiting for their price quote from Elsevier.
- Negotations seem to be slow for several SAALCK institutions.
- A long discussion on the philosophy of journal collections and service followed.
Wiley Negotiations:
- Suzy distributed a compiled list of Wiley titles with usage for all SAALCK institutions and total cost per use.
- U of L has been asking for a price quote from Wiley and they have not been able to provide one.
- Five SAALCK institutions (U of L, UK, Morehead, NKU, and EKU) are in year three of a three year group deal.
- We need to ask Wiley if they have a standard consortial structure that we should be working within and if it is possible to include more of the SAALCK libraries. At the same time, each institution will continue to negotiate individual deals. Arne will contact Mike Phillips at Wiley for more information.
Lunch Break
ProQuest Products:
- Cherry distributed a comparison between ProQuest Nursing Journals and Ebsco Health Source Nursing Academic.
- ProQuest has given us two prices: $88,200 for the four year institutions ($.90 per FTE); and $51,000 for the two year institutions. If both groups work together the price would be $125,375, which actually works out to be more.
- Based on the upcoming statewide Public Health program (see following discussion), it may be a good idea to look at this resource in order to standardize the selection of resources across the state.
- Each institution is asked to study the list and determine if it is cost effective for the group.
Public Health Programs Support:
- Lee suggests that we communicate to CPE that an appropriate level of support will be necessary in order to fulfill the resource needs of these programs.
- A representative should be at the next meeting in order to express this issue. We will make sure Hannelore continues to attend the meetings.
- SAALCK should be ready to compile data on the support that would be necessary to support the new program. A group of collection development representatives from each institution will be set up for this purpose.
Safari Books:
- Arne reported on the subscription available through this publisher and provided pricing. He will send out the brochure to everyone and all are asked to compare the source and pricing based on their own collections.
ARL Training Seminars:
- Three questions exist about these sessions: Which session(s) should we host; when should they be held; and where should we host these sessions.
- Management I is available for Fall of 2005.
- Management II is available for Spring of 2006.
- The cost of the programs: $12,000 for Management I and $16,000 for Management II with a maximum of 35 people attending each session.
- Based on these costs, we could charge approximate cost ($450) for SAALCK members and then higher rates ($700) for others to raise some seed money for future programming.
- U of L is willing to host one session.
- Carol will continue to work with ARL to schedule the session. At the same time, Carol will check to see if ARL would run more than one in Kentucky.
- Spaces should be reserved for the AICKU institutions.
OCLC Copyright Session Update:
- The session is planned for March 30 in Lexington at Young Library.
- Details will be available at the next meeting or can be found at the SAALCK website.
Other Business:
- Mike Binder moved that we express the gratitude of SAALCK to Larry Besant for his many years of service and wonderful contributions to the library community in Kentucky and wish him well in his future retirement endeavors. Seconded by Hannelore Rader, the motion passed unanimously.
Announcements:
- Lee will be attending the Information Access Alliance in Washington DC on February 11, 2005. The group will be discussing antitrust issues in the publishing industry. She will report back to SAALCK about the event.
- Murray State was recently reaccredited.
- Kate Seago announced that Ann Doyle is the new Collection Development Librarian at UK. The search committee for the Associate Dean is still in process.
- Morehead State is advertising for their new Dean of Library Services. There is a new President at Morehead State. Elsie is serving as the Interim Director.
- NKU has a new Director of Library Development, Nancy Perry. NKU is acquiring the papers of Congressman Ken Lucas.
- GCLC is moving to new offices by February.
- KHECC was considered a very successful conference and the organizers are asking SAALCK to participate again next year.
The next meeting is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. February 11, 2005 at U of L, hosted by KCTCS.
Adjournment:
The meeting adjourned at 2:20 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Anne K. Abate
Executive Director
