Call to Order:
Arne Almquist called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m.
Minutes were distributed and approved.
KHECC Wrap-up:
- Arne reported that attendence for KHECC was 260, counting vendors; between 40 and 50 were librarians. There were librarians from most SAALCK institutions in attendance.
- Ebsco and Proquest were "gold" level sponsors.
- There were many cross-discipline opportunities that were successful. The keynote came from the library world.
- The SAALCK discussion tables were not well attended, but interesting. Subjects discussed included e-reserves/document delivery, distance education, and virtual reference.
- Planning is beginning for next year.
LAMA Institute Update:
- Arne spoke with LAMA about the low quality of the presentation. LAMA has offered to make arrangements to make it up to SAALCK with either a free workshop or something else.
OCLC Copyright Workshop:
- Carol is still waiting to schedule the date for the event. OCLC agreed with the pricing, title, etc.
- We still need to determine the venue.
- We also need to determine how much of the planning will be taken care of by OCLC and how much will be handled by GCLC staff.
ARL Training Workshops:
- Carol has been doing some research into the possibilities and the price of their workshops.
- The group was polled regarding their interest. Ideas include: management training, budgeting, basic management skills for young managers, project management.
- There will be an advantage of having networking time so that the managers at the various institutions can learn to work together.
- We will aim for Fall 2005 or early 2006.
- Carol will continue to investigate the possibilities.
Report from Elsevier Negotiation Team:
- Arne presented the offer that was made to Elsevier on October 4th including the PowerPoint presentation.
- Arne distributed a letter and proposed agreement that will be sent to Elsevier through Bob Zuzak. Elsevier appears ready to come to some compromise.
- Each institution will provide a final list of 2005 titles by November 1, 2004. This will be used to create the UTL (Unique Title List) that Elsevier requires for their deals. UK and UofL will compare their lists of adds and cancels to begin preparation of the UTL. Suzy will optimize the list by getting rid of all zero use titles and all titles over $30 per use. This list will be ready by November 1. Each institution will send to Arne an estimated cancellation figure. We will state to Elsevier an overall estimate of cuts across the consortium of 7%.
- The team will continue to negotiate with Elsevier.
NAXOS Issue:
- There was no issue with the NAXOS contract. NAXOS was having system problems themselves.
- We need to get NAXOS to institute an automatic timeout. Anne will contact them about that.
Wilson:
- Wilson contacted Laurene to renegotiate her deal. Laurene needs a list of databases in order to work with them.
SAALCK/AIKCU Relationship and SAALCK GCLC Relationship:
- AIKCU has contacted SAALCK about potential future relationships.
- The original SAALCK/GCLC contract was for fiscal services, identity purposes, and other limited items. This has expanded into contract negotiations and technical support.
- GCLC could develop a membership category that would include all of the SAALCK members into a special division.
- There are other options such as an outside management company, SOLINET, etc.
- SAALCK will participate with the GCLC Membership Committee to determine if a membership category can be developed to encompass SAALCK.
- The relationship with AIKCU will be investigated slowly.
Other Business:
- Hannelore passed around information about the "Last Copy Depository". This will be discussed in depth at the December meeting.
- CAS will still be attending the November SAALCK meeting.
- The Tax ID Number for SAALCK has been received and is available from the office if anyone needs it.
November Meeting:
- The next meeting will be on November 19 at 11 a.m. at the University of Louisville. Carol and Anne will not be able to attend. The December meeting will be December 10th.
Adjournment:
The meeting adjourned at 2:31 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Anne K. Abate
Executive Director
