Call to Order:
Arne Almquist called the meeting to order at 11:13 a.m.
SAALCK/LAMA Regional Institute:
- Glen passed out a summary of the event's evaluations.
- There were mixed feelings in the group about the event. While most of the evaluations were positive, some had concerns that the event was not what LAMA had advertised. Some felt that there was not enough group participation. It was also mentioned that the content was stale.
- Arne suggested that the group should express their feeling to LAMA. Arne will call the LAMA office, but he also suggested that other SAALCK members contact LAMA individually if they wish.
- Arne made a suggestion that future events should have staff from the hosting institution to help with registration, etc.
KHECC Status Update:
- Arne reported that registration for KHECC is over 200 so far with 40-50 librarians.
- Gold level sponsors such as ProQuest and Ebsco are signed up.
- Arne queried the group for suggested topics at the discussion tables. Suggestions were link resolvers, e-reserves/document delivery, distance education, and virtual reference. Arne will sketch out some details and send them to the group.
- KHECC will be held at the University of Kentucky next year.
SAALCK/OCLC Copyright Workshop:
- Carol reported that she has not heard anything more from OCLC. Based on OCLC and the venue, the event can handle up to 150 people.
- The group discussed how to approach financing the event. The money made on the LAMA event can be used as seed money for this one.
- Arne suggested doing a survey to gauge specific interest in the topic.
- Carol will send the topics to be covered to the rest of the group.
- Suggestions for the event included having a topic on intellectual property and patents, using the term "intellectual property" instead of "copyright," and offering discount rates to students and/or KCTCS members.
- Marketing will be handled by GCLC. A flyer should be produced and made available electronically.
- Tentative registration fees of $75 (base), $85 (SAALCK non-libraries), and $100 (non-SAALCK) were proposed by the group.
- Glen suggested the possibility of broadcasting the event over video conferencing.
SciFinder Scholar Update:
- Larry proposed that SAALCK invite a Chemical Abstracts representative to the October meeting to discuss a consortial deal. Group discussion followed.
- Larry distributed a list of institutions with access to CAS databases.
- After discussion, it was decided to invite the CAS representative to the November SAALCK meeting.
SAALCK Salary Survey:
Arne thanked Mike Binder for assembling the salary survey.
Diversity Survey:
This item was tabled until the next meeting when Laurene Zaporozhetz is present.
Procedures for Joint Purchase of Resources:
- The group discussed the steps that should be involved in formalizing consortial deals with vendors.
- The group agreed that legal counsel should be sought before signing contracts with vendors.
- Suzy suggested obtaining a sample contact early in the negotiations so that it can be reviewed.
- After discussion, the group decided to form a committee to develop the procedures. The group will include Suzy Palmer and a representative from GCLC. The committee should have a draft set of procedures ready by the October SAALCK meeting.
Possible Vendor Visits:
- The group decided not to invite TDNet for a visit.
Report from Elsevier Negotiation Team:
- Glen distributed notes from the team's meeting earlier in the month.
- Arne will be the group's representative to Elsevier.
- Highlights of the group's requests include having a shared collection of electronic resources with print items purchased by individual members as desired.

- Every SAALCK member needs to have their Elsevier data to James before the October meeting.
- Arne will take the requests to Elsevier and request a price quote or counter proposal.
October Meeting:
- The next meeting will be on October 8 at 11am at the University of Louisville. James Burget,, Lee Van Orsdel, Suzy Palmer, and Cherry Berges will not be able to attend.
- Arne will send an updated list of future meetings and hosts to the group.
