Approval of the Minutes:
Laurene moved to accept the July 9, 2004 minutes and Larry seconded. The minutes were approved unanimously with minor revisions provided by Carol.
SciFinder Scholar:
There is some interest in the product among the members. Larry presented his research on the product. They do accept consortial arrangements and have worked with Indiana, Pennsylvania, and California, among others. Larry will contact them to try to develop a new approach.
OCLC Copyright Workshop:
Carol proposed that SAALCK consider sponsoring a standard workshop offered by OCLC. Carol would be interested in hosting this in Lexington. Carol will negotiate with OCLC for an option with 3 speakers to be scheduled in the spring of 2005.
KHECC Conference Update:
So far, there are 36 presentations plus vendor papers. Sponsorships are coming in and so far include ProQuest, Endeavor, Ebsco, and Solinet. People are encouraged to register and send as many people as possible. A good showing from the library community will encourage the vendors.
Consortium Business:
- Glen introduced Anne Abate as the new SAALCK Executive Director. Glen will work with Anne to assure a smooth transition.
- LAMA Regional Institute Update – Glen provided an update. There are 100 people registered and the event should be profitable. The GCLC Office was thanked for making this Institute possible.
- ebrary and Faulkner Trials – Trial were conducted. Both companies are requesting follow-up comments. Based on consensus of the group, Faulkner will be dropped for now.
- Cambridge has contacted Glen about the renewal. By consensus, the group will go forward with the renewal.
Elsevier Update:
- Arne met with two Kentucky representatives with mixed results. He also met with Bob Zuzak, the consortial rep.
- It may be possible to bring the group into compliance for the 2005/6 year.
- Elsevier will send a list of subscriptions for all participants.
- Ebsco has also offered to provide lists of Elsevier titles.
- Each member must be qualified to negotiate as a consortium by: 1. being a complete subscriber; 2. no cancellation of titles in the last 3 years. If these things are true, we can go forward with a deal as a group.
- All subscription lists will be compiled by James.
- Arne suggests that a small committee be selected to negotiate with Elsevier. This group will coordinate the message and the issues. Arne, Carol, Suzy and Anne will make up the committee.
SAALCK Diversity Survey:
Gender, age and race will be added to the survey by Laurene and Mike.
Kentucky Virtual Library Update:
- Sole sourcing is now much easier.
- They are now focused on K-12 and adult education.
Pending Discussions:
- September – Elsevier Negotiation Plan
- October – Last Copy Discussion; continuation of Elsevier Discussion
- November – Statewide approval plan (Laurene)
- December – SAALCK becoming a legal entity; GCLC/SAALCK Contract; SciFinder
- Spring -- Electronic Thesis and Dissertations
