Call to Order:
Arne Almquist called the meeting to order at 11:12 a.m.
Approval of the Minutes:
Arne called for a vote to accept the May 21, 2004 minutes. The minutes were approved unanimously.
Consortium Business:
- LAMA Regional Institute Update – Glen updated the group on the status of planning for the August 13th event. Registrations have been strong and there should not be a problem with filling the workshop. Glen reminded everyone to register their eight attendees.
- ebrary Trial – Glen reminded the group that institutions can individually go to the ebrary web site and sign up for a trial.
- Faulkner Information Services Trial - Glen distributed information about two of Faulkner's products. He also arranged for SAALCK institutions to participate in a trial of the resources. The trial will be active until July 22. Glen will collect feedback from the group.
- SAALCK EIN Number for Bank Account - Glen informed the group that GCLC's auditor would prefer that the SAALCK bank account be registered under its own tax ID number instead of using GCLC's. It is fairly easy to obtain an ID and Glen will work with Arne to fill out the appropriate paperwork.
- Status of Executive Director Search – Glen reported that GCLC will conduct interviews during the week of the 12th. A new director should be in place in August.
KHECC Conference Update:
- Arne reported that 12 papers have been received so far for the conference. The deadline to submit papers has been extended to August 30.
- Response for sponsorship from vendors has been good so far. Endeavor and Proquest are among the sponsors.
- Registration costs should be around $100. They are currently planning on 300 attendees.
- Arne stated that the conference organizers are looking for content that applies to more than one group such as both education and libraries. Group discussion followed.
- Arne suggested that this conference may be a good opportunity for SAALCK to solidify its presence.
Elsevier Update:
- Arne received a call from a new Kentucky representative. The rep. offered deals for Science Direct, but was unaware about any consortial deals for the group.
- Suzy has been speaking with Bob Zuzak and she now has a better understanding of exactly what Elsevier is providing for UofL.
- James also reported that UK now has a clearer idea about which titles are available to them.
- Lee reported that EKU has canceled several titles and has renewed a 1-year contract. They are still considered a "complete" customer.
- The group agreed that they are reluctant to sign a multi-year contract with Elsevier.
- Arne suggested that each institution cut back on their own subscriptions until they have only what they need. The group can then collectively contact Elsevier for a consortial deal.
- James informed the group that Elsevier's pricing model is set such that canceling some subscriptions will likely raise the costs of remaining subscriptions.
- Lee suggested that the group collect titles from each institution and compile it into a master list.
- The group should send a proposed list of cancellations to Elsevier. Institutions should coordinate with each other so that some of each title is kept.
- The group should minimize business with Elsevier until they recognize the group. Negotiations should not be done unless done as a group.
- By July 19, each institution should send its Elsevier titles to James.
- Lee suggested that the group rely on the comprehensive institutions to keep titles that others can drop.
- Carol suggested that Bob Zuzak and/or the other Elsevier reps. be invited to the September SAALCK meeting. Arne will contact him.
Wiley Update:
- James reported that Wiley is more organized than Elsevier. They provide something similar to the Science Direct package.
- Wiley allows a 10% swapping window without incurring any fees.
- Under their consortial model, all institutions have access to all titles.
- Everyone should sent their list of Wiley titles to James/Suzy.
Additional new products for consideration:
- Naxos Music Library – Arne distributed information to the group about the Naxos product. He said that it is a better deal than classical.com and they have a consortial discount available. Arne will look into it and will forward information to the group.
- Endeavor – Arne said that Endeavor has some great new products that the group may want to look at. These include ENCompass, Meridian, and a link resolver.
Kentucky Virtual Library Issues:
- Several people in the group have heard rumors that KYVL may not renew agreements for certain databases. This would mean that SAALCK institutions and others would need to arrange a different agreement for products like Ebscohost, WorldCat, and more.
- The group speculated on when the databases may become unavailable. It could be as early as October.
- Arne will contact KYVL and try to determine if there is any truth to the rumor. If it is true, the group may want to look into extending the current contract if possible.
Potential sponsorship of 2008 National Diversity in Libraries Conference:
- Carol polled the group on their interest in sponsoring the conference.
- There is potentially a lot of work involved and the question of how much of a dollar commitment was raised. Apparently, different levels of financial sponsorship can be available to different institutions.
- Lee suggested that this is a way to improve people's views of academic libraries in Kentucky.
- Laurene Zaporozhetz moved that SAALCK offer to sponsor the 2008 conference. Hannelore Rader seconded the motion which passed unanimously.
SAALCK Salary Survey:
- Laurene distributed a list of diversity points to the group.
- Carol noted that not much more than gender and race can be included in the survey because the other points are not known.
- After discussion, the group decided to focus on year of birth, race (using ARL definitions) and gender.
Next Meeting Date:
The tentative date for the next meeting is Thursday, August 12th at Northern Kentucky University's Steely Library. The LAMA conference will be held at NKU on the following day.
Election of SAALCK VLAC representative for 2004-2005:
Lee Van Orsdel moved to elect Laurene Zaporozhetz as the VLAC representative from SAALCK for the upcoming year. Carol Diedrichs seconded the motion which passed unanimously.
Pending Discussions:
- State-wide approval plan – October meeting
- SPARC membership – drop
- SAALCK becoming a legal entity – December meeting
- SAALCK/GCLC contract – August/September meeting
- Electronic Thesis and Dissertations – spring
- Salary Survey – September (or before if ready)
