§ SAALCK Directors' Meeting
Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY
9/22/92
(RD 9/12/92)
- Why we need to take the initiative in Pursuing Cooperation Among Our
Libraries
- Budget Reductions
- Those we have already experienced
- Those that may be likely in the future.
- Computer Network Development
- Need for planning to include the sate University Libraries and the wider library community.
- Need to ensure that the network will promote our ability to communicate and share resources.
- No suitable coordinating agency to do this for us
- Unsuitability of the CHE
- KDLA makes no such provision for planning for the state University Libraries.
- Budget Reductions
- Initiatives Which We Can Discuss Today
- Cooperative Collection Development
- Geared specifically to save money
- Is it feasible for each library to develop certain subjects collection that the other libraries would not need to duplicate?
- Is it feasible for each library to subscribe to certain journal titles that other libraries would not need to duplicate?
- If the above are feasible, what kinds of provisions could be made to
achieve prompt communication of requests and delaying of materials:
- … Fax?
- … Internet?
- … NOTIS thing?
- … Use of UPS for item delivery?
- … Shoring up personnel in our ILL units?
- If cooperative collection development is feasible, how can we prepare
a cooperative policy document in a relatively short time?
- For books, use LC classification tables and designate certain subjects (similar to UofL and LFPL)?
- For journals, designate subjects and then do a title-by-title review?
- Other?
- Geared specifically to save money
- Computer Network Development
- Should we seek a network only for the state university libraries or one for the entire library community of the state?
- What are our aims for the network?
- By what means can we achieve either of the above?
- Do it ourselves?
- KDLA as a development and coordinating agency?
- Other?
- What action should we take to achieve whatever it is we believe we should accomplish?
- Cooperative Collection Development
- How to Make Our Group Effective in Cooperation
- Study cooperative plans in other states such as Illinois, Indiana, Atlanta and Florida?
- Is our present, informal organization adequate to achieve cooperation?
- If not, what steps do we need to take to make it more effective.
- Can we do this above?
- If not, should KDLA’s help be enlisted?
- Action Plan
- What do we do next?
