§ SAALCK Directors' Meeting

April 5, 1990

Minutes

Present: Larry Besant, President (MoSu); Michael Binder (WKU); John Bryant (UK, for Paul Willis); Ralze Dorr (UL); Coy Harmon (MuSu); Rebecca Kelm (NKU); June Martin (EKU, for Ernest Weyhrauch).

The meeting convened at Lake Cumberland State Park. The minutes of the October 12, 1989 meeting were approved.

It was agreed that unless a special meeting was needed for a special purpose that the next meeting would be at the annual KLA fall meeting, to be held October 25-26, 1990. It was noted that any agenda items should be sent to the President by the end of September.

Informal discussion centered on a range of building topics including the sick building syndrome and the preservation “movement” (KELM), the need for a separate HVA system in your building (Dorr), the relationship of building climates, etc. to staff morale (Binder), and the correlation among these various items (Bryant). It was agreed that the particular range of topics should be brought up as a separate issue with the CHE Committee on Academic Libraries and also with the KLA Academic Section for program possibilities.

Under old business, there was discussion about inviting the community colleges to join the SAALCK-sponsored FAX network.

Under new business, there was discussion of (1) the White House Conference on Library and Information Services, (2) the benefits of the SAALCK Salary Survey to member institutions, (3) the upcoming KHECC, and (4) the lack of specificity in current IPEDS data.

Some discussion ensued about reciprocal agreements and a KLN document which is updating these agreements. There was agreement among the members that now we all recognize each other’s card.

A motion was passed (made by Binder, seconded by Martin) that Besant as 1989-90 President of SAALCK represent the members on the Advisory Committee for Kentucky’s White House Conference activities.

Regarding the SAALCK Salary Survey, Martin noted that the CHE Salary Survey is annual, done for instructional faculty only, and compared to benchmarks. After discussion, it was decided to continue the SAALCK Salary Survey on an annual basis, and Martin and Besant agreed to do it again.

Robinson announced that CIKCU will hold a meeting on April 25 at Centre College with the theme, preparing for automation. General discussion was held on the work of the CHE Committee on Academic Libraries.

Dorr noted (for Vice Chair Bowman) that a new Vice Chair needs to be elected. Binder nominated Weyhrauch, and the motion carried unanimously.

Respectfully submitted,
/signed/
Michael Binder
