§ SAALCK Directors' Council Meeting
SAALCK Director's Meeting
October 2, 1986
Louisville, Kentucky
Present:
Ernest Wehyrauch, Chair (EKU); Martha Alexander Bowman (UL); Michael Binder (WKU); Celia Wall, representing Coy Harmon (Murray); Don Lyons (KSU); Paul Willis (UK); Helen Williams, representing Larry Besant (Morehead); Mary Ellen Rutledge Elsbernd (NKU).
Following the introduction of each member, several topics of interest were discussed.
- SAALCK Brochure – Martha Bowman distributed the newly created “What's so special about Kentucky's University Libraries?” brochure which was composed by the SAALCK Brochure Committee. The directors were highly pleased with the brochure and requested that a special thank-you be extended to the members of the committee, Sherrill Redmon, Chair Mary Bragg, Wilma Howard, Becky Leavy, Sharon McConnell, Bill Marshall and Nancy Campbell.
-
Automation – Each director gave an update on automation activities at their library.
WKU – Michael Binder noted that WKU is negotiating with NOTIS, which will eventually replace the inhouse system. Mention was made that the WKU and UK computer center directors are communicating with one another regarding NOTIS.
Murray – Celia Wall reported that Murray is interested in LS 2000. She mentioned the possibility of sharing a computer with other university interests, i.e., registration.
UK – Paul Willis related that UK has approximately 600,000 records in their database and over 100 terminals are in operation. The computer center has been supportive and helpful with system installation and maintenance activities. He noted that OCLC provided assistance but that much of the work has to be done by the home institution.
Morehead – Helen Williams announced that Morehead is near completion of their retrospective conversion project. Currently, they are requesting funding for an online system.
KSY – Don Lyons reported that KSU is planning a building addition. The architects who worked on the UL library project have been selected. It is possible that a computer room may be designed in the new addition.
NKU – Mary Ellen Rutledge Elsbernd reported that NKU will finish the retrospective conversion project in 1987 and has requested funding for a system. As a member of GCLC (Greater Cincinnati Library Consortium), NKU plans to join the GCLC regional database system. GCLC is sending out RFP's for the host sites and to software companies. It is possible that NKU may serve as host site for the GCLC system. A project director is being hired by GCLC to administer the activities.
UL – Martha Bowman related that UL will begin cataloging production on NOTIS this month. Authority work is being done by UTLAS, and SOLINET will convert the materials shelf list. The Health Sciences library will bring the system up first and Ekstrom will follow.
EKU – Ernest Weyhrauch reported that EKU is considering the use of the 4341 IBM on campus for their system.
- CHE Symposium – Paul Willis notified the group about the November 6 & 7 “Education, Economic Development and the Information Age” Symposium and suggested that SAALCK directors might want to attend. After lengthy discussion, several directors agreed to attend and report to the groups at the December meeting.
-
Other – Michael Binder proposed that we invite Linda Reel, KLN Executive Director, to meet with the group in December. The group agreed it would be good to discuss networking and academic libraries with her and suggested we meet in Frankfort.
Discussion centered on meeting with the CIKCU directors in order to broaden academic networking efforts. It was decided that the spring KLA Academic meeting would be the most appropriate time.
Ernest Weyhrauch suggested that the group examine statistical conformity in the future. The group agreed to look at ARL definitions for statistical gathering and HEGIS requirements.
-
News items – Michael Binder reported that WKU Libraries have received $250,000 for a humidity control system.
Martha Bowman commented that SOLINET is discontinuing LAMBDA and will concentrate on providing services which do not conflict with OCLC.
It was noted that IBM is resurrecting DOBIS, which is being installed at Emory.
