§ SAALCK Directors' Council Meeting

MINUTES OF THE SAALCK MEETING

September 20, 1977
Eastern Kentucky University
John Grant Crabbe Library

Present:

Discussion of Independent College Library Status

Betty Delius represented the Council of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities.

John Demos presented background information on the history and development of SAALCK including:

  1. Subcommittee structure
  2. Activities relating to the Council on Higher Education
  3. Kentucky Library Association programs

After lengthy discussion among Council members regarding voting status of the CIKCU representative, the motion was made by Ellis and seconded by Demos that CIKCU be represented as a nonvoting member. Motion passed unanimous.

Weyhrauch moved that SAALCK encourage CIKCU to invite a representative to their meeting. Strohecker seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimous.

Betty Delius invited a representative of SAALCK to attend the CIKCU meeting during KLA, and the chair appointed Weyhrauch to represent SAALCK at this meeting.

Strohecker moved that CIKCU representatives be invited to participate as affiliate members of SAALCK’s subcommittees. Seconded by Weyhrauch. Motion passed unanimous.

Strohecker reported that KENCLIP will be funded from October 1 through September 30. Strohecker moved that the SAALCK Chairman write a letter to the State Librarian regarding funding of KENCLIP and to specifically request that the State Department of Libraries outline their plans for KENCLIP during the next two years. Seconded by Weyhrauch. Motion passed unanimous.

Strohecker distributed a program for KLA, October 6, 7, and 8, 1977. He emphasized that SAALCK would have a part of the program Thursday, October 6, from 1-3 p.m. This program would be chaired by Holloway with Chris Shallenbarger answering questions regarding SOLINET users’ plans and problems. Strohecker also emphasized that the subcommittees would also meet during KLA, and he pointed out that KLA would be held September 28-30, 1978, at the Galt House in Louisville. It was necessary to schedule this date because of the conflict with the Southeastern Library association meeting the first weekend in October, 1978.

The Chair asked Weyhrauch to prepare a detailed salary survey to be distributed among the SAALC members. The information included in this survey would be salary range, experience, beginning salaries, degrees, etc. Weyhrauch agreed to survey the group to collect this information.

Paul Willis reported on the Kentucky plans for a White House Conference on Libraries to be held in Washington, D.C.< /acronym>, in 1979. The Kentucky plans call for a pre-White House Conference in 1978, in which two-thirds of the representatives will be non-librarians and only one-third will be representing the library profession. Kentucky will be permitted to send nine delegates to the White House Conference on Libraries with only three being library representatives.

The next meeting of SAALCK will be held at Western Kentucky University, December 9, 1977, 10 a.m. CST.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
