The SAALCK directors have spent the current academic year exploring ways to further our ability to provide library resources for higher education in the state through cooperative licensing of databases. We have identified a couple of possible partners who would be willing to be SAALCK's fiscal agent in regard to a joint billing arrangement, which is usually a prerequisite to vendor discounts. At this time, we believe we are ready to explore one or two possible licensing deals with vendors on behalf of the SAALCK membership.
We are asking your committee (roster attached) to meet and review the most urgent and compelling licensing opportunities in terms of the shared interests of our consortium members. We would like to have at least one recommendation of a database from a vendor already represented in the KYVL databases. We have been told that additional databases can be selected from the approved vendors, even if the database is not currently licensed. The State would/might act as fiscal agent if we agreed to pursue such a purchase. We'd like to test that theory if you can identify such a database.
We would ask you to also recommend at least one database outside of the KYVL list of approved vendors, against which we could test another possible fiscal agent.
It may help your committee to know that the Deans and Directors in SAALCK have voiced significant interest in the following databases for joint purchase. These ideas should not interfere with the work of the committee on its own ideas, but we would like for you to know that there is some interest in the following:
- Dissertation Abstracts
- ABI Inform-full image
- Historical NY Times
- Louisville Courier Journal-this last database has particularly strong interest among our Group.
We would like to be able to reach some agreement on a possible database or two before budget commitments are set for the coming fiscal year. A report from your committee would be very helpful in late May or early June, if that is possible.
